Glossary

Algorithm: Algorithms are part of the machine learning framework that create outputs based on statistical predictions.

Artificial intelligence (AI): Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science. Its goal is to create computer programs or tools that can mimic human intelligence and complete tasks that generally require human skills.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): A technology that has not yet been developed but imagined as programs that could surpass human intelligence and perform a number of operations without human input.

Bias: Bias is the weighting of data towards information and data that has been part of dominant discourse and can reflect discriminatory attitudes and perpetuate bias prevalent within society.

Chatbot: A chatbot is the program which simulates human conversation to interact with users.

ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer): A large language model developed by OpenAI that uses machine learning and Natural Language Processing to generate text.

Data: Data is a unit of information which can include text, audio, video and other forms of information stored by generative AI tools.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI): Refers to generative AI tools that create new content based on algorithms and statistical prediction.

Hallucinations: The instance of generative AI inventing facts and producing non-existent references.

Large Language Model (LLM): A type of artificial intelligence algorithm that uses deep learning techniques and very large data sets to understand, summarise, predict and generate novel content.

Machine Learning (ML): Machine learning is inspired by the human brain and neural networks, meaning that it can perform tasks without explicit instructions using statistical models and algorithms.

Natural Language Processing (NLP): NLP the ability of AI tools to respond to and process language as humans do in spoken and written form.

Prompt: A prompt is the question or instruction you provide to a generative AI tool for a response.

Prompt Engineering: Prompt engineering is the science behind creating effective prompts to retrieve the most useful and accurate responses from a generative AI tool.
