5 RMIT University advice
RMIT University advice
Students at RMIT are encouraged to engage with artificial intelligence tools as they will increasingly become an integral part of life and work in the future. Understanding how to interact with these tools to support and supplement tasks for efficiency, productivity and knowledge will be crucial. It is important however, to engage with these tools thoughtfully and critically, and to understand how to use these tools ethically and appropriately.
Your course coordinator will advise on whether generative AI tools are allowed for your study or assessments. This information will be included in course guides and assessment tasks. If you are unsure, check with the course coordinator.
Your course coordinator or educator will determine how generative AI tools can be used, and may fall into one of these categories:
- No restrictions on the use of AI tools in completing an assessment task.
- Restrictions in the ways you can use AI tools in completing an assessment task.
- Restriction of the types of AI tools you can use in completing an assessment task.
- AI tools are not allowed to be used at all in completing an assessment task.
Depending on your discipline, different AI tools may be recommended. For example, image generators may be used for creative arts, or code generation tools for data science and technology.
The following uses of AI are not permitted and will constitute a breach of academic integrity policy:
- To complete or contribute to an assessment task when it has not been specifically allowed.
- To produce ideas that you don’t reference and try to pass off as your own.
As mentioned, using AI tools requires critical thinking and caution, as they will not always produce accurate or reliable information, and if not considered thoughtfully, can affect the quality of your assessment.
