16 Suggesting ideas

Purpose and important information

Generative AI tools can help you to find and explore ideas related to a particular issue or topic for various types of assessments. You can use the suggestions provided as a starting point, as a way to get you thinking about how you will write your assignment, and for further research.

Important note: Analyse each suggestion for relevance and appropriateness for your assignment question. Also, remember that the AI tools are trained on data sets up to a certain time point, and may generate ideas that are out-of-date.

Prompt template

Note: The following prompt type is most suitable for language-based generative AI. In some generative AI tools, you will obtain higher-quality responses by using a series of prompts, rather than one longer prompt. Follow up prompts can be used to further explore an area.

This type of prompt first asks the generative AI tool to act in a relevant role, and then asks the tool to brainstorm ideas for a topic or type of assignment.

Act as <a role> writing a <task> on <topic>. Brainstorm ideas you can write about and include short explanations for each idea.

Example prompt and output

The following example was tested in RMIT’s Val.

Act as an expert in logistics, writing a paper on inventory management in not-for-profit organisations. Brainstorm ideas you can write about and include short explanations for each idea.
