Resources on Responsible Practice in writing, referencing, teaching and learning

The following resources provide practical guidance that will assist you in integrating Responsible Practice into the content you create and use in your open book.

Writing

Use of language in your writing

RMIT University Library acknowledges that discrimination and prejudice are expressed through language and that attitudes and cultural values are evident in the way we choose words. See the RMIT Terminology Guide for the use of ‘Aboriginal’ and ‘Torres Strait Islander’ references. See also, the Australian Government Style Manual: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Charles Darwin University has developed the A-Z of First Nations Terms: CDU Student Guide which includes examples of strengths-based language.

Appropriate use of resources

For book authors intending to use their open book in teaching, the AIASTIS Guide to Evaluating and Selecting Education Resources is designed to support teachers in selecting appropriate resources for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and languages in a respectful, meaningful and self-reflective way.

Referencing

The CAVAL Indigenous Referencing Guidance for Indigenous Knowledges provides referencing guidance for authors on appropriately citing Indigenous Knowledges in academic writing within the Victorian context.

Teaching and Learning

Where an open book is intended for use as a teaching resource, Responsible Practice requires the integration of Indigenous perspectives in curriculum design and content. A collection of curriculum maps has been developed to guide RMIT teachers in the inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in curriculum. See Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives in Curriculum.

Research

The RMIT Indigenous Research Network is dedicated to fostering a research environment that is grounded in meaningful community engagement. It works for and in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, Traditional Owners, Advisory Groups, and researchers committed to responsible and respectful research practice. Through this approach, the Network supports the development of innovative, high‑impact research outcomes that advance community aspirations and long‑term success.
