There are four groups of irregular verbs in the present simple. The irregularity appears in the stem of the verb form, not in the endings.

Grupo 1

Verbs where an “e” in the stem transforms into “ie” in the singular persons (yo, tú, él, ella, usted) and the third plural person (ellos, ellas, ustedes).

Ejemplos: los verbos empezar, querer, sentir.

Some other verbs that belong to this group are: despertarse, cerrar, preferir, venir, tener, empezar, comenzar, entender.

Grupo 2

Verbs where an “o” in the stem transforms into “ue” in the singular persons (yo, tú, él, ella, usted) and the third plural person (ellos, ellas, ustedes).

Ejemplos: los verbos acostarse, volver, dormir.

Some other verbs that belong to this group are: almorzar, poder, encontrar, recordar, soñar, llover, contar, costar.

Also, jugar belongs to this group, although it has a “u” and not an “o” in the stem.

Verbs where an “e” in the stem transforms to “i” in the singular person (yo, tú, él, ella, usted) and the third plural person (ellos, ellas, ustedes).

Los verbos vestirse, pedir.

Some other verbs that belong to this group are: servir, decir, mentir, elegir.

Grupo 4

Verbs with irregularity in the first-person singular (“yo”).

Los verbos tener, poner, hacer, venir.

Los verbos decir, salir, ver, saber.
