Before We Begin

For whom is this textbook created?

This textbook is created for beginning students who want to learn basic Spanish for the purpose of discovering a pluridiverse world of the Spanish language and culture in an Australian context.

This textbook can be used for self-study practice, as part of our face-to-face course or in conjunction with any other grammar textbook. As a beginning level e-book, this book includes many basic grammar tips, readings, and interactive written exercises for students to complete. In this e-book, as a learner you will un/learn cultural aspects from Spain and all the different Latin American countries.

By completing the modules in this e-book, students will have achieved level A1 as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(CEFRL).

How is this textbook structured?

This interactive e-book is comprised of five modules. Each module consists of three to six lessons. All modules start by indicating the context and objective of the lesson. Each lesson has a vocabulary list, a dialogue using original avatars, a small table with grammar explanations and examples, dialogues with audios, and interactive exercises. To end each lesson, we have included three more parts: Para terminar, which is a reading section, Compartiendo historias, a section of videos created by some of the students learning Spanish with us, and to end a Podcast sharing some culture from some Native Spanish speakers. We have many images and tables, which are followed by transcripts, which you can access by selecting a link.

How is reading, listening and grammar handled in this textbook?

Each reading in this book was written by the authors of this book. At the end of each reading, there is an exercise for you to answer. The grammar exercises have been created using using Pressbook platform, the H5P program, and Adobe Express for you to practice your own learning and complete it in your own time as many times as you need or want to.

How is Spanish pronunciation presented in this textbook?

Spanish is spoken in 21 countries and each of them has their own accent and colloquialisms. Within each country, there is a variety of pronunciation and vocabulary, influenced by geography, ancestors and other foreign languages such as English. In this book, most of the time, you will hear at Glenda, from El Salvador and Susana from Spain, talking and you will notice that each of them has a different accent but can communicate without any hurdles. You will also hear other accents of people that we have invited to be part of the creation of this book. Just listen actively and enjoy it!!

How should you use this textbook?

This book is not a grammar book, this book is a practice book that complements the lessons from the classroom. However, when it has been considered necessary, a brief theoretical/grammatical note has been added that is found in a box or table. This e-book features free education options that allow anyone, anywhere, anytime, and at their own pace to learn about a wide variety of topics from the Spanish-speaking world. This option allows the integration of various modern pedagogical technologies such as video presentations, audios and a wide range of fun and interactive exercises that attract and retain the student’s attention.
