Introduction

RMIT has Five Indigenous Strategic Commitments: the most relevant of which in relation to creating open books are: 1) Responsible Practice; 2) Indigenous Knowledges; and 3) Community Engagement. See Respect for Indigenous Cultures in Australia for more information about RMIT’s work of acknowledging the histories and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

RMIT University (n.d.) defines Responsible Practice as “recognising, interpreting and acting upon multiple principles and values according to the areas and ways in which we work, and the context of all our activities and relationships. These principles and values include cultural safety, inclusion, ethical responsibility, reciprocity and reconciliation, among others” (Reconciliation to Responsible Practice, para. 1).

RMIT University Library requires all people involved in developing RMIT Open Press books to ensure Responsible Practice is integrated into all the processes of open book development and publication. This chapter covers these considerations, which include: consultation with Community; integrating Responsible Practice in the creation of your book content; and drawing on resources designed to promote Responsible Practice in writing, teaching and learning.
